HOSPITAL

The facility is a large teaching hospital with approximately 224 beds, offering wards for medicine, surgery/GYN, pediatrics, and maternity. Care is primarily provided by locally trained, physician-supervised clinical officers and medical assistants. Additional services include chronic disease management, child vaccinations, malnutrition treatment, antenatal care, family planning, HIV/TB treatment, cervical cancer screening, palliative care, and dental care.

PREPARING FOR YOUR VISIT

Please note that the first 3 items are time-sensitive and need completion weeks to months before your rotation date.
Passport: You need a valid passport that is good for at least six months after your travel dates.
Required Documents: Provide any documents requested by your department head.
Flights: Visitors must arrange and pay for their own flights to Blantyre, Malawi. Since this is a Seventh-day Adventist institution, please avoid traveling on Saturday. Do not book your flight to Lilongwe; it must go to Blantyre (Chileka International Airport). Purchase your tickets early and confirm your flight 72 hours before departure. Check your email daily as flight times may change. We suggest Ethiopian Airlines for the best route to/from the US.
Transport: The hospital will provide transportation from the airport to the hospital. IMPORTANT: Confirm your travel plans with guesthouse manager Memory Katsoka.

Facilities

Basic x-ray, ultrasound and laboratory services. CT, dialysis, chemotherapy located in
Blantyre, about a one hour drive away.
Climate:
Rural, subtropical highlands
Rainy season from November – April (Malaria peaks Dec – March)
Cool, dry season from May – August
Hot, dry season September – November.
