Postgraduate surgical education
Malamulo’s general surgery residency trains African medical graduates through the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons, joining structured postgraduate education to the daily work of a Malawian teaching hospital.
A residency built around service
Residents take on progressively greater clinical responsibility under supervision. Training includes assessment, operative decision-making, perioperative care, inpatient management, follow-up, teaching, and professional formation.
This is comparable in purpose to postgraduate surgical residency elsewhere, while its recruitment, accreditation relationships, examinations, and regional context are distinctly African.
Malamulo, PAACS, and partners
Malamulo supplies the clinical setting, hospital teams, and institutional continuity. PAACS organizes a wider network of surgical education and faculty support. Loma Linda University and other partners have contributed academic collaboration and visiting faculty over the program’s history.
That partnership is strongest when it develops African surgeons and reinforces the Malawian teams who carry the hospital’s work from one year to the next.
Program history
More than a visiting rotation
The surgical department was rebuilt beginning in 2010, the international surgery rotation followed in 2012, and PAACS residents began training at Malamulo in 2014. The durable story is not a succession of short trips; it is an established residency embedded in the hospital.
